Truth Be Told

In our lives it is very easy to believe the lies that we tell ourselves.
- That we have to have everything together
- Everyone else is doing fine, so we should also

The truth is that we are all broken people. Nobody is perfect, and everyone has struggles in their lives. So why do we find it so hard to share it? Why is it so difficult for us to be vulnerable with one another and allow others to encourage us when we are going through tough times?

I think partly, we are afraid that people will judge us or think less of us - at least that is my experience. But that is just another lie. I wouldn't think any less of a person because they didn't have everything together, so where is this idea coming from? Why do we have such different standards for ourselves compared to others?

When we bottle everything down and refuse to share, when we try to keep all the mess of our lives hidden away, it ends up putting more and more pressure on the door. Eventually we break down in our hurt. We try to keep in the tears, try to deny that the pain exists. But denying something doesn't make it go away. It's ok not to be ok. (Maybe It's Ok - We are Messengers).

Even if we don't understand it, God knows and cares about every moment of our lives. He created us and he knows each day we go through. Every joy and every pain. He knows and cares about every tear we cry.

"You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears
in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book." - Psalm 56:8

If we were more open about our lives - both the good and the bad, maybe we would all be able to support one another more. We would be able to give one another hope that although it may be painful now, one day, in God's kingdom of the renewed creation there will be no more sorrow and no more tears, what a wonderful hope to look forward to!

"He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no
more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things
are gone forever." - Revelation 21:4

This song, "Truth Be Told" (lyrics below) speaks of these lies that we tell ourselves and the response we give to people that "I'm fine" when really we are not. It reminds us that no matter what we say, God knows the truth. He knows the hurt and the pain we are going through. Not only does he know that it exists, but he has gone through it himself! Nothing that we can do will change the love that he has for us. He is faithful and comforts us in the darkest times (Psalm 91).

Lie number one you're supposed to have it all together
And when they ask how you're doing
Just smile and tell them, "Never better"

Lie number 2 everybody's life is perfect except yours
So keep your messes and your wounds
And your secrets safe with you behind closed doors

Truth be told
The truth is rarely told, now
I say I'm fine, yeah I'm fine oh I'm fine, hey I'm fine but I'm not
I'm broken
And when it's out of control I say it's under control but it's not
And you know it

I don't know why it's so hard to admit it
When being honest is the only way to fix it
There's no failure, no fall
There's no sin you don't already know
So let the truth be told

There's a sign on the door, says, "Come as you are" but I doubt it
'Cause if we lived like it was true, every Sunday morning pew would be crowded
But didn't you say the church should look more like a hospital
A safe place for the sick, the sinner and the scarred and the prodigals
Like me

Well truth be told
The truth is rarely told
Oh am I the only one who says
I'm fine, yeah I'm fine oh I'm fine, hey I'm fine but I'm not
I'm broken

And when it's out of control I say it's under control but it's not
And you know it
I don't know why it's so hard to admit it
When being honest is the only way to fix it
There's no failure, no fall
There's no sin you don't already know
So let the truth be told

Can I really stand here unashamed
Knowin' that you love for me won't change?
Oh God if that's really true
Then let the truth be told

I say I'm fine, yeah I'm fine oh I'm fine, hey I'm fine but I'm not
I'm broken
And when it's out of control I say it's under control but it's not
And you know it
I don't know why it's so hard to admit it
When being honest is the only way to fix it
There's no failure, no fall
There's no sin you don't already know
Yeah I know

There's no failure, no fall
There's no sin you don't already know
So let the truth be told
